Tour Description

From the center of the Barcelona, you cannot miss the jagged cliffs of Montserrat rising high above the city. Literally meaning “serrated mountain”, this beautiful summit is perfect for exploring on our half day trip.

We leave the hustle and bustle of morning rush hour behind, departing Barcelona at 8:00 AM by private air-conditioned coach for the hour-long journey to Montserrat. With this early departure, we enable you to avoid the long lines that form at some of the mountains most famous attractions: the Benedictine monastery and renowned Black Madonna statue.

During your journey our expert, local guide will give you the history of this geological wonder while you take in views of the Mediterranean Sea and sprawling city below. Upon arrival, your guide will give you a brief orientation and lead you directly into the gothic monastery.

Santa Maria de Montserrat is home to the world-famous Black Madonna. Standing at just 3 ft tall, this Romanesque wooden statue is believed to have been carved sometime in the 12th Century and brought to the mountain for protection from invaders. Legend has it that the monks were unable to move the statue when constructing the monastery and were forced to build around it.

After touring the monastery, you will have free time to choose from a range of activities available on the mountain. These include: a scenic cable car ride with impressive views of the mountain’s unique rock formations; an interactive exhibit on the rich history of Montserrat; an array of walking trails or a trip to the museum of contemporary art that includes masterpieces by Dali and Monet.

You will also have plenty of time to sample some delicious Catalan delicacies at the artisan stalls outside Santa Maria de Montserrat. These local producers sell everything from traditional liqueurs and local honey to savory cheeses and cured jamón.

With your exploration complete, you will board the bus and make your way back down the mountain to relax before ending the unforgettable day with an authentic Flamenco performance. Enjoy a complimentary drink and this musical tradition of Spain in the most scenic of venues, a 17th-century Gothic palace.
