Description

Join us on this day-long journey, a pilgrimage to the Vatican's four major basilicas – the most important churches in the world. All contained within the city of Rome, you’ll enjoy the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, the Holy Stairs (La Scala Santa), St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John Lateran, and St. Mary Major basilicas – all on one unparalleled tour.

Our day begins with No-Wait access into the Vatican Museums, allowing you to bypass the long lines and enjoy more valuable time within these hallowed halls. An intimate morning tour of 12 people or less, your expert, local English-speaking guide will bring the world’s most incredible art collection to full vibrancy, providing the historical accounts behind every brushstroke. Visit the ornate Raphael Rooms among other treasures before arriving at one of the highlights of our tour, the Sistine Chapel. From below this incredible visual masterpiece, you’ll be escorted through a special access door, allowing us to bypass another long and winding line our tourists, straight into St. Peter’s Basilica. Stand in awe before the largest Church in Christianity – guardian of St. Peter's tomb, Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s immense Baldachin. This experience is worth the trip alone, but this incredible journey does not end there.

Many do not realize but St. Peter’s Basilica is one of only four major basilicas in Rome – the other three being St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John of Lateran and Santa Maria Maggiore. Lucky for you, you’ll be able to visit them all on this valuable tour. Scattered throughout the city of Rome, we’ll take you to each one via private air-conditioned coach. These are some of the most important places of worship in Catholicism.

After St. Peter’s, we’ll take a nice, relaxing break for lunch (approximately 2.75hrs), before heading to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here lie the remains of Saint Paul amidst an intricate display of 5th Century mosaics shimmering alongside brilliantly colored original frescoes.

From here we’ll take you to Basilica of Saint John Lateran, an imposing Roman cathedral and traditional seat of the Pope. Built by Constantine even before Saint Peter's, it is actually the most important church within in Christianity (even more important than St. Peter’s Basilica) because of its Papal headquarters.

Next you’ll visit the 28 white marble steps said to be climbed by Christ during his passion – the Holy Stairs. While time does not allow for ascending all of them (since to do so takes an hour and a half as tradition says you must say a prayer on each one), you are welcome to take the first step, say your prayer and absorb the incredible energy of this area. We’ll wrap up your experience at Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major), which showcases quite exuberant mannerist sculptural decorations, stunning 5th century mosaics, enchanting frescoes and Bernini’s tomb. It is a dichotomy of visual senses not to be missed.

Important notes

  • St. Peter's Basilica and other religious sites may be subject to unscheduled closures for religious ceremonies. When this occurs, we will provide guests with an extended tour of the Vatican Museums, or appropriate alternative. While we undertake to tell guests beforehand if there are any planned disruptions to the Basilica's opening hours, this is not always possible. In these cases, we are unable to provide refunds or discounts. Please note that appropriate dress is required for entry into some sites on this tour. Knees, shoulders and backs must be covered.
  • Due to increased security measures at many attractions some lines may form on tours with 'Skip the Line' access.

FAQs

  • Is there a mandatory dress code?

Yes, the Vatican has a strict dress code. Men, women and children must have their shoulders and knees covered at all times.

  • Where does the tour meet?

The tours meet at a location very close and convenient to the entrance of the Vatican Museums. Full details of the exact location are included on the confirmation voucher you will receive when you book your tour.

  • I am taking a Vatican Tour that includes Saint Peter’s Basilica, will we go up the dome?

It is possible to climb the Dome on your own if you wish, however you will need to purchase a ticket directly on site.  Our tours do not include a visit to the Dome. Please note that if you intend to climb the Dome after your tour ends, you should make sure to book a morning tour (not on a Wednesday) as the Dome access is already closed in the afternoon before our afternoon tours reach Saint Peter’s Basilica, and the Basilica is often closed on Wednesday mornings.

Tiffany was one of the...

Tiffany was one of the best guides we have come across. My partner and I did a similar tour 2 years ago, but were doing it again so the children (teenagers) could do the visit. I enjoyed this tour so much more than the first time around - thanks to the way Tiffany presented the history, stories and information. She had so much knowledge and a clear passion for the history. We had to leave a few minutes early to get to the airport, and I was disappointed to have to do this - keen to hear what she had to say - whereas, normally by the end of a 3 hour tour, I have had enough. The kids agreed they did not get bored at all during her tour.

Incredible knowledge and very personable. She did a great job at the beginning of the tour putting us in the mindset of what we will be seeing which was incredible helpful when going through the specific rooms that we already had ground level knowledge that she built on throughout the tour

Elizabeth was wonderful...

Elizabeth was wonderful and it was so nice taking a smaller sized tour!!!
