Planning a visit to Northern Italy can be difficult – there’s a lot to see and never enough time to see it all. Day trips from Milan are a great way to experience other parts of the region but again it’s hard to choose. Should you visit the jewel-like sparkling Lake Como on the Italian side with its lovely lakeside villas and quiet, picturesque town; or should you go to bustling Lake Lugano across the Swiss border and add another country to your list? And what about “the pearl of Lake Como,” Bellagio? Can’t forget that!
Good news! You no longer have to choose. Our new day trip from Milan covers both of these stunning lakes in just one day. With all the details taken care of, such as round-trip transport from Milan to Lake Como and Lugano, and an expert English-speaking guide to accompany you throughout, you won’t need to worry about any of the details. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Alps.
Our day trip departs from a central location in Milan, easy to reach early in the morning. Here you’ll meet your expert local guide who will accompany you for the day, filling your journey with entertaining stories and anecdotes about the different areas you’ll be passing. From there, you’ll board a comfortable air-conditioned private coach and head straight from Milan to Lake Como, just an hour away.
Surrounded by mountains and beautiful scenery that changes year-round like a moving painting, Lake Como has been Italy’s top holiday destination for centuries. Once upon a time the expensive houses that line the pristine lakeside were owned by opera singers and performers from the stages of La Scala, but today they are owned by notable actors and famous musicians.
We’ll enjoy a relaxed boat tour of the lake as your expert local guide points out the holiday homes of Richard Branson, Matthew Bellamy of Muse, and George Clooney of multiple blockbuster movies. You’ll also see Star Wars and James Bond movie villas you might recognize from these popular Hollywood films. Sit back and imagine how the other half lives as you soak up the peace and quiet of this beautiful mountain retreat – it’s not a terrible way to spend your summers, we’re sure you’ll agree – and enjoy drinks and snacks at the onboard bar and restaurant.
Next we head to beautiful Bellagio where you’ll have enough free time to explore the picture-perfect town on your own. Visit the local shops and artisanal vendors, step into an authentic café for some traditional tid-bits, or enjoy a sweet libation in the most nostalgic bars and restaurants of the city – the choice is entirely yours!
Then it is back aboard our private coach for a beautiful drive through the mountains towards our next stop of the day – Lake Lugano. We’ll cross the Swiss border to get to this striking city - one the most popular destinations in all of Switzerland. Known as the “Monte Carlo of Switzerland” and nestled at the foot of the Alps, the town of Lugano is blessed with a stunning backdrop of its vast lake and imposing (often snow-capped) mountains. One of the country’s top tourist destinations you can often spot celebrities and famous athletes and entertainers walking amongst the crowd.*
How you spend your time here is up to you. Your guide will provide recommendations and directions depending on your interests. Culture hounds should take time to visit the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli. Here you’ll find a beautiful painting called ‘Passion and Crucifixion’ created by Bernardino Luini whose works were often mistaken for those of Leonardo da Vinci. This particular painting of his is widely considered the most important Renaissance painting in Switzerland.
Rather a spot of shopping? You’ll find everything you could possibly want in Lugano’s picturesque downtown district, full of luxury goods and that oh-so famous and delicious Swiss chocolate to take home. Shop, eat, take as many photos as you can – Lake Lugano is yours for the afternoon to do with as you please before we board the coach again and head back to Milan in time for dinner.
Visiting two countries and two of the area’s most beautiful locations in just one day, our day trips from Milan offer the perfect mini-break from the chaos and bustle of the city. Kick back, relax and enjoy yourself for the day – we’ve thought of all the little details so you don’t have to. And who knows, with an expert guide on hand throughout the day, filling your head with stories, anecdotes and local insight, you may even learn something.
