The Roman Forum by sunset

Discover the History of Ancient Rome

As the sun sets over Rome you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the Roman Forum from the Campidoglio, where your guide will tell you the stories and anecdotes that bring these stunning ruins to life.

Cloaked in darkness and lit up like a stage, the Colosseum during the evening is a dramatic and atmospheric sight not to be missed by any visitor to Rome. Experience the Colosseum as few people ever do on our special access Colosseum Evening tour.

You’ll enter after the Colosseum has closed to the public, when this ancient amphitheater is at its most quiet. With an expert, English-speaking guide on hand, you’ll explore areas usually closed to the public, such as the Colosseum underground where gladiators and animals once waited before battle, as well as the arena floor.

Your official Colosseum guide will tell the tales that bring the amphitheater to life – the rituals carried out by gladiators before battle; the emperors who decided life or death and the politics that played out in an arena built for 82,000 people from all walks of Ancient Roman life.

There’s more to our Colosseum Evening Tour than the amphitheater though. Before you visit the Colosseum your guide will take you to Campidoglio for the most beautiful views over the Roman Forum. Closed at this hour, the Roman Forum makes for one of Rome’s most atmospheric sights. From your bird’s eye view you’ll hear about the birth of Rome and the exploits of emperors who took turns in building the Roman Empire up and tearing it down.

With groups of only 25 people or less, your tour will be intimate and your guide easy to interact with. Travelling at a quieter time of day, you’ll also find the streets of Rome quieter, without the hassle of daytime hawkers and tourists.

This unique tour is perfect for visitors who want to explore the Colosseum at a slower pace than is possible during the chaotic (and hot!) daylight hours.

Important notes

  • On this tour, some of the venues or parts of the venue may be subject to last-minute, unpredictable closures. When this occurs, we are happy to offer customers an extended tour in keeping with the advertised total length of the tour.

  • At the end of the tour, will I be able to explore the Colosseum on my own?

If you wish to explore the Colosseum on your own after your tour, you should take our Express Colosseum Tour with Gladiator's Entrance and Special Arena Floor Access (with or without Breakfast). This gives you a guided tour of the Colosseum only. After the tour you can choose to either enjoy the skip-the-line entrance tickets to the Roman Forum (our guide would accompany you to enter but the visit is not guided) or stay inside the Colosseum without the guide.

For any other tour however, our tours follow a pattern of visit and you would not be able re-enter the Colosseum without waiting in the line and purchasing an additional ticket.

  • Can I book Colosseum Underground as a Private Tour?

The Colosseum does not allow any company to conduct private visits to the Underground areas. Therefore, we can only run this tour as a group tour.  We limit our groups to no more than 24 people to ensure the tour is special for all our guests.

  • It’s raining, is my tour still running?

Yes. Our tours run rain or shine.
