Cloaked in darkness and lit up like a stage, the Colosseum during the evening is an impressive and dramatic sight not to be missed by any visitor to Rome. Now you can experience this scene both inside and out, on our special access evening tour.
You’ll enter after the Colosseum has closed to the public, when this ancient amphitheater is at its most quiet. With an expert, English-speaking guide on hand, you’ll explore restricted areas, such as the Colosseum underground where gladiators and animals once waited before battle.
Your tour begins at the Campidoglio, or Capitoline Hill, for the most beautiful views overlooking the Roman Forum. Closed at this hour, the empty Forum makes for one of Rome’s most striking sights. From your bird’s eye view you’ll hear about the birth of Rome and the exploits of emperors who took turns building the empire up and tearing it down.
After your visit to the Forum, your guide will lead you to the crown jewel of Rome: the Colosseum. Here you will hear the tales that bring the amphitheater to life – the rituals carried out by gladiators before battle; the emperors who decided life or death; and the politics that played out in the arena.
With groups of only 25 people or less, your tour will be intimate and your guide easy to interact with. This unique tour is perfect for visitors who want to explore the Colosseum at a slower pace than is possible during the chaotic (and hot!) daylight hours.
On this tour, some of the venues or parts of the venue may be subject to last-minute, unpredictable closures. When this occurs, we are happy to offer customers an extended tour in keeping with the advertised total length of the tour.
If you wish to explore the Colosseum on your own after your tour, you should take our Express Colosseum Tour with Gladiator's Entrance and Special Arena Floor Access (with or without Breakfast). This gives you a guided tour of the Colosseum only. After the tour you can choose to either enjoy the skip-the-line entrance tickets to the Roman Forum (our guide would accompany you to enter but the visit is not guided) or stay inside the Colosseum without the guide.
For any other tour however, our tours follow a pattern of visit and you would not be able re-enter the Colosseum without waiting in the line and purchasing an additional ticket.
The Colosseum does not allow any company to conduct private visits to the Underground areas. Therefore, we can only run this tour as a group tour. We limit our groups to no more than 24 people to ensure the tour is special for all our guests.
