Known as the City of Water, Bridges, Masks and many other names, your expert local English-speaking guide will bring the nooks and crannies of Venice to life as you walk past silent piazzas and sleepy side streets. Tour past the cursed Casa Ca’ Dario where many of the home’s inhabitants have met timely and suspicious demises. Do they still reside there? You be the judge. Then walk along the cobblestone streets and possible footsteps of Casanova, known for his amorous exploits as you imagine him sneaking to-and-fro and in-and-out of arched windows.
During your Secret Venice Walking Tour, you’ll visit parts of the city that most tourists never see. As you walk, you’ll see Ernest Hemmingway’s favorite haunts and hear stories of the real Desdemona (from Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’) whose home you will pass, and learn of a very different woman – Peggy Guggenheim whose behavior outraged locals.
Featured in many Hollywood blockbusters, including James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Tomb Raider, to name a few, Venice is home to local legends, current celebrities and historical luminaries alike – all who have left their mark on this incredible city. See Harry’s Bar, where Ernest Hemingway enjoyed his favorite pastime (other than writing, of course), as well as the home of Peggy Guggenheim, who inherited a fortune after losing her father on the Titanic and turned it into one of the most interesting art collections in the world. As if to pave the way for heiresses after her, you’ll also learn how she scandalized the city with her nude sunbathing and pack of tiny leashed dogs.
You’ve indeed heard of Othello, one of the most famous plays of love, betrayal, and revenge. You’ll see the house where Desdemona may have lived before her tragic tale was transcribed by an Italian author before eventually being stolen by a man you probably know – William Shakespeare!
We end the tour on a romantic note, with a 35-minute moonlit gondola ride along the quieter back canals of Venice. Your gondolier, in his famous striped shirt, will leisurely punt along the waterways built for these flat-bottomed boats. You’ll see why one of Venice’s other names is the “Floating City” while enjoying silent inner reflection as there is no commentary on this part of the tour. With only six passengers maximum, it is a wonderful way to end an enchanting evening. Treat yourself to this unusual and unbelievable experience – Secret Venice by Night.
*Please note that the gondola ride cannot operate during heavy rain or adverse weather conditions. In this case either an alternate date or a partial refund will be provided to clients.
