Top Picks for Colosseum

General Info

Largely intact nearly 2,000 years after its completion in 80 AD, the Colosseum is shrouded in the mists of time. Its image is so powerful that it has sparked legends, inspired musings, and even had films dedicated to the rites of power and sacrifice that unfolded inside its walls.

The name we use today is something of an error. The Colosseum, from Colossus, actually referred to the 99 ft. statue of the Emperor Nero that stood next to it for centuries. To the Romans the Colosseum was the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium), a masterpiece that was unrivaled in the ancient world.

Evidence shows that it could hold 50,000 to 80,000 spectators, and was a complex theatrical machine used for one thing only, entertainment. Gladiatorial games, staged hunts with exotic wild animals from across the Empire, and other spectacles including possible mock sea battles all tickled the thunderous crowds here.

  • At the end of the tour, will I be able to explore the Colosseum on my own?

If you wish to explore the Colosseum on your own after your tour, you should take our Express Colosseum Tour with Gladiator's Entrance and Special Arena Floor Access (with or without Breakfast). This gives you a guided tour of the Colosseum only. After the tour you can choose to either enjoy the skip-the-line entrance tickets to the Roman Forum (our guide would accompany you to enter but the visit is not guided) or stay inside the Colosseum without the guide.

For any other tour however, our tours follow a pattern of visit and you would not be able re-enter the Colosseum without waiting in the line and purchasing an additional ticket.

  • Can I book Colosseum Underground as a Private Tour?

The Colosseum does not allow any company to conduct private visits to the Underground areas. Therefore, we can only run this tour as a group tour.  We limit our groups to no more than 24 people to ensure the tour is special for all our guests.

  • Do you offer the Colosseum tour in other languages?

Yes. English, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish. However, please note that this is only available for the 3hrs group/private tour.
